About Bessie Smith
Growing up as an impoverished African-American in the post-Civil War US South, Bessie Smith sand the blues with her brother at first before she was identified by a talent scout and signed to record her music. Bessie Smith would go on to make over 150 recordings for Columbia before dying in a car accident in 1937. The hospital in which she passed away is now on the Mississippi Blues Trail.
